In
1908, Mary Baker Eddy included the By-law for the Christian Science
nurse in the Church Manual, Article VIII, Section 31. It can be
found on page 49 under the heading Discipline in the article
Guidance of Members and reads in full:
A member of The Mother Church who represents
himself or herself as a Christian Science nurse shall be one who
has a demonstrable knowledge of Christian Science practice, who
thoroughly understands the practical wisdom necessary in a sick
room, and who can take proper care of the sick.
The cards of such persons may be inserted in
The Christian Science Journal under rules established
by the publishers.
Mrs. Eddy established the By-laws for all members of
The Mother Church and as written in First Church of Christ,
Scientist, Miscellany, (p. 230:9) “This church is impartial. Its
rules apply not to one member only, but to one and all equally. Of
this I am sure, that each Rule and By-Law in this Manual will
increase the spirituality of him who obeys it, invigorate his
capacity to heal the sick, to comfort such as mourn, and to awaken
the sinner.” Based on the principled teachings in the Holy Bible
such as the Ten Commandments, the Psalms of comfort, and the Sermon
on the Mount, together with Mrs. Eddy’s writings, we have
established classes for Christian Science nurses.
Our courses are provided in a safe haven where
fellow members of The Mother Church are invited to join together to
study, pray, and share ideas. Christian Science nurses who have had
dedicated Christian Science nursing practices over the years serve
as instructors throughout the learning process. Opportunities to
practice skills based on the ethics of Christian Science, and to ask
questions prior to taking responsibility for caring for others, is
integral to what we offer. We’ve seen the value of sharing from
experience and the importance of giving care in an orderly,
principled, and compassionate way. Within each class there is a
building of camaraderie. These courses nurture obedience to the
Church Manual By-laws therefore bring healing, comfort and
awakening.
